What is this ‘SMAM’ Scheme?
To empower women in agriculture, the Central Government has introduced the ‘Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization’ (SMAM) scheme.
The primary objective of this scheme is to provide essential modern farm machinery at affordable prices to small and marginal farmers. Significantly, special efforts are made under this scheme to provide particular benefits to women farmers.
What is the Exact Benefit of the 50% Subsidy for Women?
Under the SMAM scheme, women farmers receive a direct 50% subsidy on tractor purchases.
For example:
- If the cost of a tractor is ₹4,50,000.
- After receiving a 50% subsidy, the woman farmer will only have to pay ₹2,25,000 (half the cost).
- The remaining ₹2,25,000 will be covered by the government.

Under the same scheme, general (male) farmers receive a 40% subsidy. This means a woman farmer gets an additional discount of ₹45,000 compared to a male farmer.
