Big Relief for Farmers: GST Rates on Fertilizers and Agro-Chemicals Reduced

The Central Government has announced a major relief for farmers. The GST Council has decided to slash the tax rates on fertilizers and agricultural chemicals. From 22nd September, essential agro-inputs such as sulphuric acid, nitric acid, ammonia, bio-pesticides, and micronutrients will now attract only 5% GST, compared to the earlier 12%–18%.

This move is expected to lower farmers’ input costs and boost agricultural productivity across the country.

Why This GST Cut Matters to Farmers

For years, farmers have been burdened with the high cost of fertilizers and agro-chemicals. Products like sulphuric acid and ammonia are not only critical raw materials for fertilizers but also play a key role in improving crop yield and quality.

With GST rates slashed, the prices of these agro-chemicals are set to drop significantly. Farmers will now be able to buy them at much lower prices, directly reducing their overall cultivation expenses.

Encouraging Eco-Friendly Farming

Another significant benefit of this decision is the promotion of bio-pesticides and micronutrients. As these inputs become more affordable, farmers can adopt organic and sustainable farming practices with greater ease. The move is in line with the government’s vision of promoting “Green Agriculture.”

New Energy for the Agriculture Sector

According to agri-experts, reduced GST rates will cut production costs and, in the long run, help farmers increase their income. The impact will not be limited to small and medium farmers but will also support agri-business companies. With cheaper fertilizers and chemicals, food production is expected to rise, thereby strengthening the nation’s food security.

Overall, the GST Council’s decision is being hailed as a farmer-friendly step that will inject new energy into India’s agriculture sector.
