When evening shadows stretch across Assam’s green farmlands, the life story of Dhoni Ram Chetia stands out as a powerful reminder that progress can grow even in places once troubled by conflict. A young farmer from Tinsukia district, Chetia has become a symbol of hope for rural youth—showing that success can be cultivated through patience, hard work, and dedication to the soil.
Early Life: Rising Strong Despite Struggle
Growing up in Tekeri Gaon’s Pangeri region—an area that previously wrestled with insurgency and unrest—Chetia’s childhood was marked by hardship. Losing his father at just six years old forced him to shoulder responsibilities well before his time. His family relied heavily on farming, spending long hours in the fields to survive.
In class eight, he shifted to Digboi, where he balanced schooling with demanding farming work. Financial constraints prevented him from completing college, yet the experience he gained in agriculture slowly shaped his identity and future.
Choosing Farming Over Extremism
During a time when several youths in his locality were swayed toward extremist groups in search of quick money or recognition, Chetia chose a different path. Even as a child, kind neighbours encouraged him by letting him sell papayas from their garden—an honest way to support his family without falling into dangerous activities.
He now believes many young people limit themselves by only chasing government or private jobs and lose confidence when opportunities don’t appear. According to him, agriculture is a dignified profession offering stability, independence, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to society.
Farming Success & A Vision for Assam
Now 38, Chetia cultivates nearly 25 bighas of land, producing bananas, apples, litchis, papayas, sugarcane, and various seasonal crops. His diverse farming practices have earned him recognition as an innovative and forward-looking farmer in his district.
His long-term dream is to see Assam become self-sufficient—no longer dependent on fruits and vegetables imported from outside the state. For Chetia, each sapling planted represents not just future income but also a commitment to peace, progress, and rural empowerment.
Using Social Media to Inspire Youth
Chetia actively shares his farming experiences on social media, posting simple, practical videos that document his work in the fields. His online presence has inspired many young people—especially those from conflict-affected or economically challenged areas—to experiment with growing their own crops.
Today, aspiring farmers from across India reach out to him for hands-on advice, eager to learn realistic and tested farming techniques rooted in real-life experience.
A Story of Hope
Dhoni Ram Chetia’s journey shows that in places where violence once overshadowed opportunity, agriculture can offer a powerful alternative. His story is proof that farming is more than a livelihood—it can be a path to peace, stability, and transformation for entire communities.
